Councillors back merger plans

Councillors have just voted to go ahead with the proposed merger of Merrylee Nursery with Lime Tree Nursery.

Jill Ledgerwood, spokeswoman for the Merrylee Nursery Parents' Forum, said: "We are absolutely disgusted at the way the children, staff and parents at Merrylee Nursery Class have been treated. The consultation period was a sham, with the majority of elected Labour representatives unable even to do us the courtesy of replying to emails or correspondence. Where is the consultation in that?

"From the public gallery, Labour councillors spent most of the debate looking at mobile phones or Blackberries – so they obviously have the technology, just not the will to represent their constituents.

"We were assured that Labour councillors were to be allowed a free vote, but this turned out to be yet another lie, which flies in the face of democracy. Nurseries should never been included in the estates strategy, something which the council only admitted after the consultation process ended, shifting the goalposts for those campaigning.

"The people of Glasgow have been denied their chance to speak, but we can assure Labour councillors that we will get our chance – and it will be at the ballot box."
